Location: Oxford City

Cratus acted for Oxford-based developer, Cantay Estates, in overseeing political engagement relating to Cantay’s successful planning application for 86 new homes (50% of which are affordable) to be built at William Morris Close in Cowley.

The site, identified in the Oxford City Emerging Local Plan for development, was previously occupied by the Lord Nuffield Sports and Social Club, which had been closed for a number of years. As a fenced-off piece of land, it was offering no value to the local community either for much-needed housing or by providing accessible public space. There was concern that access to the site would be lost as a result of any development, despite there having been no public access in recent memory.

Cratus helped Cantay Estates by engaging with members of Oxford City Council’s East Area Planning Committee to understand their aspirations for the area and any concerns they had. This included providing a comprehensible briefing paper outlining the key points of the scheme. Cratus also worked to raise awareness in the community and promote the positive benefits for local residents. With Cratus’s support, planning consent was achieved in November 2019.
